From August showers . . .
. . . come next May's poppies.
After they bloom in May, these poppies dry up completely, right to the ground. I rake away the dried foliage, but leave the roots alone. Winter will kill off this new foliage, but the plants will survive through the winter, ready to put up new growth once the snow and ice melt away.
